To make his model look more like the prototype, Brian Everett built
up the side sill of his
Branchline boxcar kit with styrene.
The ballast hoppers were rebuilds of the ACF 1958 cu. ft. covered hoppers, with simplified white Block lettering (no compass logo). These cars had MK - ballast gates added, and the roof was cut open for easy loading of ballast.
Undecorated model is available from Bowser (#55600 , plus ECW MK Ballast Doors #117-9100) or Eastern Car Works (#2200).
Decals: Herald King H-111 for doing the ballast cars(large block
lettering).
Champ H-57 is also useable for this car.
"I used Pollyscale Steam Engine Black paint, and weathered
the car using artists oils. These paints are nice,
as you can place a little on some formica (free samples from Home
Depot), and they can be "thinned" using
Mineral Spirits (Odorless kind at Art store). I used Raw Umber,
Black, and White to weather the car."
Here's a shot of both versions of the prototype...
Here's a photo from John Alaniva of the Accurail 50' box showing
the differance in appearance when
a 9' door is used to replace the 8' door included with the boxcar.
This is another model made from the Accurail boxcar by Scott Heiden.
The coupler pockets have been
replaced with Details West #1009
pockets; the extended roofwalk was made from Cal-Scale's #491
roofwalk.
