This car was a one of a kind 114-ton experimental car built by Whitehead & Kales (a DT&I on-line customer) in 1965. This was the W&K demonstrator that was used in a trade show somewhere, probably Chicago. Evidently DT&I was their only coil car customer as W&K was heavily involved in auto rack production.

As delivered, it had a black carbody with white lettering with unusual corrugated hoods painted orange with black, white, & yellow lettering in a unique style for sales purposes by W&K. The coil hoods had DT&I compass
heralds with extra advertising slogans reading: "Cushioned Coilster" and "High-cube - High capacity"

There is an as-built photo of the car in the W&K ad in the 1966 Car Builder's cyc. on page 289, as well as Scott Trostel's 'The Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad' on page 195.

The car disappeared from the GTW roster sometime after 1985.

1050-1084

These 99-ton cars were built by Evans in September 1967. They have a fishbelly side sill design with yellow carbody and black lettering. As delivered, they had black angled corner hoods with yellow billboard DTI lettering.

The lease on these cars was not renewed and they were off the roster at end of 1978. The remaining cars became EJ&E 6800-6830 and MKT 14015.

This series is a very close match for the Walthers HO and N scale Evans coil car.

1100-1199

These 94-ton cars were built by Whitehead & Kales from September to November 1967(order #RF-18025). They are a fishbelly side-sill design with yellow carbody and black lettering. The cars were delivered with black round hoods (wide horizontal, rectangular, corrugations with vertical straps from W&K) with yellow billboard DTI lettering.

Some cars received two different styles of yellow Proform fiberglas hoods with black DT&I lettering in the early 1980s. As of 2004, a small number of these cars are still running around in original DT&I paint.

1200-1299

These were 95-ton car built by Whitehead & Kales in August 1968 (order #RF-76035). They were a fishbelly side sill design with yellow carbody and black lettering and came with black round hoods (wide horizontal, rectangular, corrugations with vertical
straps from W&K) with yellow billboard DTI lettering.

Some cars received yellow Proform fiberglas hoods with black DT&I lettering in the early 1980s.

They were taken off the GTW roster in 1984 and became CNW 39700-39794.

1300-1349

These are 99-ton cars built by Evans in June 1968. They had a straight side sill design with yellow carbody and black lettering. The cars were delivered with black angled corner hoods with yellow billboard DTI lettering.

These cars disappeared from the GTW roster sometime after 1985. Some became IHB 1000-1009.

The Walthers discontinued HO kit 932-3854 is numbered 1337 from this series, but the Walthers car has an 'Evans Type 3' fishbelly underframe instead of a straight underframe (DTI 1050-1084 are a much better match to the Walthers model). The Red Caboose N and HO Evans coil car has an 'Evans Type 4' straight underframe which matches the DT&I 1300-series cars.

1350-1355
These were 99-ton cars built by U.S. Railway Equipment Co. in June 1970 (order #982). They were a straight side-sill design with yellow carbody and black lettering. The cars came with black angled corner hoods with yellow billboard DTI lettering.

In July 1985 these cars were repainted in GTW blue and renumbered GTW 307150-307155.

The Red Caboose N and HO Evans coil car is a good match for these cars.

1375-1394

The last batch of 99-ton cars were built by U.S. Railway Equipment Co. in September 1975 (order #1375). They had the 'Evans Type 4' straight side sill design with black carbody and white lettering. They came equipped with black angled corner hoods with white billboard DTI lettering.

These cars are still on the CN roster - a handful are still in their original DT&I paint which has held up extremely well.

The Red Caboose N and HO Evans coil car are based on this series of cars.
