DTI 403 released 1/5/77 repaired
DTI 417 released 1/5/77 repairedThe accident was covered on the DT&I Yahoogroup back in February 2002 - E. Wilcox posted a photo from his collection of the damaged GP40s (and GP38 #211?) and Jim Hediger posted the following:Page 11: L&N Decoursey KY yard - "...Foreign power present are an assortment of [Chessie], NW, DT&I, PC, and an array of CR C-C's used on PC/LN unit coal trains.""DT&I had a number of accidents in the 1970s involving its second generation units in the areas around Delta and Lima, so there's some confusion about dates and locations.
As I recall, the NB train in the photo was sitting on the main at Delta waiting for a summertime meet. The oncoming SB rolled through the siding and had a shifted load of steel plate? which was not visible until it came around the corner. It hit the standing units before anyone could react other than to yell into the radio and hit the floor on the engineer's side. Fortunately, the SB was moving slowly and went into emergency as the car involved derailed, but nothing rolled off the embankment..."
The engines weren't immediately rebuilt in 1975 due to a downturn in business (GP38-2s 221-227 were immediately put in storage when they were delivered in 7/75 due to a lack of traffic).
