History

Equipment diagram courtesy Brian Everett

The 18000-18099 series boxcars were built in 1962 by Pullman Standard. They came equipped with 'Hydroframe-60' 60"-travel cushion underframes; a feature that was prominently advertised on the sides of the car. They were originally painted light green with black ends, although some cars were repainted solid green when they went through the Jackson Shops for class repairs around 1980.  A few cars recieved solid red paint at this time.

Modeling the Car

For a limited time (end of August 2006), a decorated version of this model is available in HO scale. They won't have the cushion underframe and coupler pockets as shown in the photos below, but they are pretty easy to add yourself:

To promote the 2007 NMRA Convention in Detroit (July 22-28), the North Central Region of the NMRA in cooperation with Pacific Western Rail Systems is proud to announce a custom run car set. These cars are from the 18000-18099 series Detroit, Toledo & Ironton HYDROFRAME 60 50-foot Pullman Standard PS-1 boxcar and will be based on Intermountain's PS-1 kit. This car was introduced to the DT&I in 1962 and saw service until the buy out of the DT&I in 1984.

These cars will be available in 2 sets of 3 for a total of 6 numbers. Set "A" will represent early service cars with the full HYDROFRAME 60 slogan and set "B" will represent 3 different repaints as this car series changed while in service. Each set sells for $99.00 plus shipping. Cars will be RTR (ready to run) with metal wheels and Kadee couplers. Individual cars may be reserved for $33.00 each plus shipping. Contact PWRS for details as the preferred method of sales is for the 3-packs.

These will be available only through Pacific Western Rail Systems. Reservations are being taken now through the end of August 2006. Expected delivery date is December 2006. These are limited run cars and will not be available through local hobby shops. Your credit card will not be charged until the order is shipped.

To reserve your car now, you can go on-line using the following steps:
1.. Go to http://www.pacific-western-rail.com/<about:blank> and click on SEARCH.
2.. Enter "HO" where it asks for the scale and then scroll through the road names for Detroit, Toledo, & Ironton.
3.. Click the red search key.
4.. Click on the text next to the car's picture for a description. Note: These are prototype pictures and the actual models may vary slightly from these.
5.. Order. Please mention the Great Lakes Express 2007 NMRA convention when you place order.
Or if you prefer, you can call Pacific Western Rail Systems toll free at
1-866-840-7777.

There are  50' PS-1 Boxcars with 9' PS Doors available in HO from Kadee and Intermountain. This in-progress model is an Intermountain PS-1 with Intermountain 9' PS Doors (part #P40900-51) and cut-down Details West #1010 cushion coupler pockets.

The early Hydrocushion underframes had heavy crossmembers to support the center sill. The crossmebers on the model were made from 2 layers of 0.040" styrene stock with 1 x 12 styrene bottom webs. The Intermountain brake equipment was cut apart and rearranged based on prototype photos and an article in the August 1994 Mainline Modeler on building an identical GM&O 50' PS-1 'Hydro-60' boxcar.

The model was painted with black ends and underframe, galvanized steel roof and light green sides (Badger #16-47 Light Green). The decals were made by SGS and were available at the 2003 DT&I Meet in Jackson, Ohio (they sold out, of course). They are now sold by Highball Graphics in HO (F-243) and N scale (FN-243) - 'They Have The CONNECTIONS' for DT&I decals...

I'll post a detailed how-to article when I get the chance.
